Symposium: Universal-Communitarian Approaches to Social Values in Christian and Islam
The Kircher Network’s Hest Cluster on Christian-Muslim Relations is organizing a Symposium this summer, entitled “Universal – Communitarian Approaches to Social Values in Christianity and Islam”. It will be held from July 12th-14th 2023 at the University of Deusto, Bilbao, Spain.
There is a tension between universalism and communitarianism in contemporary plural democracies, particularly in relation to Christianity and Islam. Both traditions have a claim to universality, but they also seek to maintain their own values and community life within plural societies. This raises questions about whether modifications should be made to facilitate the assumption of shared values, or whether these traditions should defend their values and identity in a society with increasingly distant shared values. How can religious traditions appropriate social values and what ethical references can be used to build a shared morality in plural societies?
